Date: 11 March 2010 7.0 p.m.
Speaker: Dr Michael Wilks, Senior Forensic Medical Examiner, Metropolitan Police, Chairman, Society of Forensic Physicians, Deputy Chairman, Forensic Medicine Committee of the British Medical Association.
In 2007 the Metropolitan Police Service started a process to restructure its custody healthcare and clinical forensic services. Experienced forensic physicians, concerned at the potential impact on both patient safety and the integrity of forensic evidence, lobbied hard for the reforms to be evidence based without success. When the new service started in January 2009, there was a sharp deterioration in the quality of delivery and in patient safety. Using this episode as an example, Dr Wilks will address the medico-legal, regulatory and ethical dilemmas facing whistle-blowers.
