Proposing the toast to the law: Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, FRCP, FRCGP, FLSW, FMedSci

Ilora Finlay is a professor of palliative medicine and a cross-bench member of the House of Lords. She is a past President of the British Medical Association and the Royal Society of Medicine. Since 2015 she has chaired the National Mental Capacity Forum (England and Wales) for the Ministry of Justice and in 2019 was chair of the Alcohol Harms Commission. Currently, she is co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group, Honorary Professor of Palliative Medicine at the Cardiff University School of Medicine and Vice President of Hospice UK and Marie Curie Care.

Proposing the toast to medicine: Baron Faulks of Donnington KC

Edward Faulks is a barrister and a cross-bench member of the House of Lords. He was appointed King’s Counsel in 1996 and a Recorder of the Crown and County Courts in 2000. He has appeared in over 100 cases in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Between 2002 and 2004 he chaired the Professional Negligence Bar Association. Between 2005 and 2006 he was a Special Advisor to the Department for Constitutional Affairs and also served as Minister of State for Justice between 2014 and 2016. Currently, he chairs the Independent Press Standards Organisation.
