Promoting medico-legal knowledge in all its aspects

Rachael Mulheron KC (Hon) FBA is Professor of Tort Law and Civil Justice at Queen Mary University of London. Since 2023, Rachael has served as a member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal. She specialises in Torts, Medical Negligence, Collective (Class) Actions, and Civil Justice more generally.  Her publications on controversial points of Tort and Medical Negligence have been judicially cited both in the UK and internationally. Rachael was a member of the Civil Justice Council, the jurisdiction’s civil justice law reform body, for almost a decade; has participated on rules-making committees on several issues; and at the appointment of either government or judiciary, has chaired numerous law reform working parties, including ‘hot-tubbing’, BTE insurance, the proposed reform of damages-based agreements, and litigation funding. Prior to her academic career, Rachael practised as a solicitor in Construction Law in Brisbane, Australia. In 2021, Rachael was appointed as Honorary Queen’s Counsel for services to law reform, and in 2024, was elected as a Fellow of the British Academy.

Professor Mulheron becomes President of the Society on 1 July 2026 for a two year term. The Society continues its tradition of the President alternating between a doctor and a lawyer. Prof Mulheron will be the fifty-eighth President since the Society was founded in 1901.
